Library Week 2008, 18 -24 August

Library Week, 18-24th August is a celebration of libraries and librarianship in New Zealand taking place in libraries across the country

This year the Library week theme is What’s your story? and we will be celebrating in many different ways including – a Library week quiz, A miniature short story competition, and a lucky borrower draw. The library in Richmond will take part in the nation wide story-telling of Piggity-Wiggity Jiggity Jig by New Zealand author Diana Neild (our reader will be Mayor Richard Kempthorne); and we will be hosting interesting lunchtime speakers.

Great News  !

Today I received the phone call to tell us that we are in!!  Hooray.  Margaret Garland – APN – said we are looking at an October Rollout!!  So watch this space  – as soon as I know more I’ll pass it on.

This is a fantastic development for us.  Free, highspeed, highquality internet for all of our customers.

At this stage we are looking at 2 computers in Murchison, 2 in Takaka, 4 in Motueka and 8 in Richmond.  I’ll be having discussions with APN in  the next few days to confirm that.  Please Tish, Janne and Karen let me know if you would like more or if that number is about right.

In other news,  the first meeting with the PCG (project control group) went well this morning.  We’ve identified some of the issues and constraints regarding the building.  We will have Nicki Moen with us for the next two days at Richmond to work with all the staff looking at the possibilities for the library  and thinking out 15 years into the future in our brainstorming.

All very exciting!

Motueka library is looking good.  The furniture has started to arrive and once it is all in it will be looking great.

Richmond Library Update Thursday, Jul 17 2008

28 July will see the start of the Richmond Library project.

The Project Control Group will meet for the first time to get the scoping and planning underway.  After all the waiting we are going to move very quickly now.  The goal is to have the entire redevelopment done for 1 July 2009.  So no time to waste.  On 28 July, Don Robertson from RDT Pacific, Nicki Moen from Christchurch, hopefully Peter Vause from RDT in Wellington, Jim Frater, Lloyd Kennedy, Peter Darlington and I will have an initial meeting.  Nicki will stay for 2 more days to work with the staff at Richmond to gather information, and work with us to create a vision for the Richmond library.  We will be looking at the current needs but also thinking about the TDC libraries service looking out 10 – 15 years from now and coming up with plans that serve us well into the future.

Week ending 20 June 2008 Thursday, Jun 19 2008

What a lot of good things have happened this week!!

We’ve had the news that the Council have agreed to fund the redevelopment of Richmond Library to the cost of $1,000,000  which is an extra $500,000 new more than the money allocated several years ago.  The council will confirm the budget next week.  But they have voted in favour of this money so we’ve been told that it should all go to plan and get a rubber stamp next week.

Today we’ve had the proposal to drop charges on for Nelson residents passed through council and Nelson passed the same resolution two weeks ago.  So as from 1 August, all the residents of Tasman and Nelson will be able to join both libraries.

Each person joins each library and abides its conditions.  There are no universal returns.  TDC books to a TDC library and Nelson books to a Nelson library.

The libraries most affected by this are likely to be Richmond, Stoke and Elma Turner on Halifax street.   There is going to be a joint press release done by the two mayors and I imagine we’ll get a flurry of early activity as people join the two libraries.

Glennis and Ang have been discussing the ramifications of this on borrowing and Glennis will produce some documentation for everyone before 1 August.

Motueka library has been busier than ever this week as Brian and Debbie have been helping with the refurbishment by undertaking a comprehensive weed of the collections there.  The staff at Motueka have elected a colour scheme from two suggested by the consultant we used.  The scheme they’ve chosen is a very classy red and blue.

I will be working in Motueka for the next ten or so days while Karen is away.

Wishing everyone a lovely weekend.!

6/6/08 – what a week- Thank you Richmond team! Friday, Jun 6 2008

Thank  you to all the Richmond Staff who coped  with the unusual difficulties of this week with grace and style.

On Wednesday- due to a fibre optic cable being cut somewhere in the neighborhood – all of our computers were out and we were unable to go offline due to an error message.   With Ang home recovering from having her wisdom teeth out , Helen McCubbin managed the IT things beautifully.  After four hours there was a mountain of books to process after hundreds of manual issues.

Today –Two teenage girls were chased into the children’s toilets by the police ( truant officer?) and then  a uniformed policeman arrived and after negotiating for 5-10 minutes, the police decided that Pepper Spray was the best way to remove these viscious criminals from our toilet ( where they appeared to have been doing nothing in particular).  Although the police assured us that the pepper spray would dissipate in 15 minutes – clearly they didn’t know that our windows don’t open – 3 hours later we all had headaches, the children’s area had been closed all afternoon, asthmatics were suffering…..!

We don’t know what happened before nor why the police though pepperspray would be the right thing in a public building!!!!  I’ve written to the police to express our reservations about the use of pepper spray and to let them know the consequences of spraying in the library.  But once again Thanks to all the staff who managed the discomfort, and dissatisfied customers who were unable to use the children’s area, handled  the situation with aplomb!

Thanks!

Week of 19 May Saturday, May 17 2008

  • On Tuesday  20 May, I will be heading to Kaikoura for the day to meet with the TOTS librarians. On the agenda is – getting a consistent policy for the repair/replacement of the talking book covers for the TOTS talking books
  • Also on the agenda is disucussing a potential collaboration amongst libraries to buy new Library Management Software.  Dunedin City have set up a collaborative LMS purchase with the 7 surrounding authorities.   The will be buying Symphony the new product from Sirsi-Dynix group.  They will be having a shared bibliographic database which will be hosted in Melbourne. We will watch with interest how this goes as there are several interesting and new concepts here.  The consortium buying of LMS has worked for the 5 districts in Auckland with the ELGAR libraries.  But the offshore hosting will be interesting to explore as well as the implications and manifestations of the shared bibliographic database.
  • Mayor Kempthorne has asked Lloyd and me to actively investigate potential collaborations with Nelson before the next meeting of the Council Community Services Committee.
  • On Thursday – I will be going to Tauranga courtesy of the South Island Library Managers Group.  Along with Sarah Thompson from Hokatika  I will represent the South Island Public Libraries.I’ll return on Friday night and back in the
  • The Coffee vending machine has been in place for 2 weeks in Richmond and so far we have received $2.80 return!  Helen made a bold sign for the machine so hopefully people will begin to notice that it is there and start to use it.  If we get to at least 40 coffees sold/ week over the next 2 months the man will leave it with us.  If not he’ll take it away.                                        FYI  – it is real coffee– ground when you order it.  For $2 its a reasonable cup of coffee!
  • I have a DVD which was sent from National Library about the National Digital Library of New Zealand.  It is about 12 minutes long and is really interesting.  If anyone would like to have a look please let me know.
  • Cathy Vaughan and I went to the meeting of the TOTS  Local History and Heritage Web project this past Thursday.  Nicola Harwood – Nelson Public Information Services Team Leader is now driving the project and we are starting to move towards getting the project really moving.  The next step will be a request for expresssions of interest from people/groups who may wish to be contracted for the writing, editing, web design and other elements of this project.  We will hold a meeting for all those who express an interest and I will give a presentation of the project and the plan from here.  The expectation is that those in attendence will consider how they might fit in and submit a written application with samples of their work and we will then contract a person/persons to undertake the project.
  • Lianza weekend school is on 14 June and I would like to process all the registrations from TDC libraries so please forward them through to me so I can pay for all the registrations at once. Please could you get them to me this week. The programme can be found in the blog if you have not got one to hand.
  • Nicki Moen is working on the PLan for the Motueka library.  She met this week with an interiour designer who will be putting together a colour scheme for us.
  • Peter Vause has had computer problems but has promised to get the scoping document for Richmond library to us very soon.
