Greetings from Motueka Monday, Mar 2 2009
library news APN, Children's services, Motueka, SRP, Wifi 3:48 pm
Motueka library has had an extremely busy summer. We have all managed to survive with our good humour still intact! The Summer Reading Programme was very successful with 100% completion. It is such a fantastic programme, not only is it rewarding for all those involved, children, parents and library, it really is lots of fun. The Super-Hero theme was great!
Sue and I have started the school year with our running shoes on! We have 5 pre-schools we visit regularly, a local school sends a class once a week and another school we visit twice a term, with other schools planning to visit during the year.
The library has of course been inundated with Wifi and computer users, being peak tourist and apple season. We have been trialing various systems, with varying success. Having restricted areas available to only 12 laptops at any one time, and having users book in to use the tables has made marked improvement in the management of the library space.

library news APN, Motueka, Richmond 9:10 pm
Great News !
Today I received the phone call to tell us that we are in!! Hooray. Margaret Garland – APN – said we are looking at an October Rollout!! So watch this space – as soon as I know more I’ll pass it on.
This is a fantastic development for us. Free, highspeed, highquality internet for all of our customers.
At this stage we are looking at 2 computers in Murchison, 2 in Takaka, 4 in Motueka and 8 in Richmond. I’ll be having discussions with APN in the next few days to confirm that. Please Tish, Janne and Karen let me know if you would like more or if that number is about right.
In other news, the first meeting with the PCG (project control group) went well this morning. We’ve identified some of the issues and constraints regarding the building. We will have Nicki Moen with us for the next two days at Richmond to work with all the staff looking at the possibilities for the library and thinking out 15 years into the future in our brainstorming.
All very exciting!
Motueka library is looking good. The furniture has started to arrive and once it is all in it will be looking great.

Motueka Library and library news Motueka, refurbishment 1:07 pm
20 July 2008
The re-arrangement of the shelving at Motueka Library was completed on Saturday 19th July with the help of Carolyn, Tina, Debbie, Anne S. Sandee, Margot, Fiona, Karen and me – ably led by Foreman: Brian.
Brian had carefully worked through the layout plan and had created a process for the day to logically lead us from the existing layout to the new layout.
The results are fantastic. The library looks open, spacious, tidy and really appealing. The gorgeous new furniture should start to arrive this week and the very old furniture will be removed. The painter should be along soon to paint the back wall and the long side wall behind issues.
New tidy, uniform signage, a new pamphlet display area and the look should be just about complete.
It was a long long day – starting at 8:30 and finishing after 7 pm! But satisfying to see the results.
The Motueka borrowers are sure to love the new, more user friendly layout.
It may take a wee while for people to find things until they are familiar with the new layout, but they will love the increased space for reading, studying and relaxing. The new, comfortable, upholstered chairs are sure to appeal to the older folk who make such good use of the library already. The new tables and chairs will be great for those wanting to study. The new Young Adult area will surely draw in teens to this greatly improved space.

The refurbishment project at Mouteka is moving along.
Next Saturday 19th 10 of us will spend the day at Motueka shifting shelves and books into the new layout.
Clark from Ceilings and Interiors will be shifting the fixed shelving that needs shifting and also putting some new shelves in the staff areas.
Richmond glass are working on a new entrance apparatus to replace the pot plant security.
The painters should soon let us know when they can come and do the painting.
Everything is moving along nicely. Dry Crust called in today and will be doing a story about the new look once it is ready – have suggested end of August.
Have a good weekend

Motueka Library and Richmond Library and Tasman District News and library news Motueka, Richmond 11:43 pm
What a lot of good things have happened this week!!
We’ve had the news that the Council have agreed to fund the redevelopment of Richmond Library to the cost of $1,000,000 which is an extra $500,000 new more than the money allocated several years ago. The council will confirm the budget next week. But they have voted in favour of this money so we’ve been told that it should all go to plan and get a rubber stamp next week.
Today we’ve had the proposal to drop charges on for Nelson residents passed through council and Nelson passed the same resolution two weeks ago. So as from 1 August, all the residents of Tasman and Nelson will be able to join both libraries.
Each person joins each library and abides its conditions. There are no universal returns. TDC books to a TDC library and Nelson books to a Nelson library.
The libraries most affected by this are likely to be Richmond, Stoke and Elma Turner on Halifax street. There is going to be a joint press release done by the two mayors and I imagine we’ll get a flurry of early activity as people join the two libraries.
Glennis and Ang have been discussing the ramifications of this on borrowing and Glennis will produce some documentation for everyone before 1 August.
Motueka library has been busier than ever this week as Brian and Debbie have been helping with the refurbishment by undertaking a comprehensive weed of the collections there. The staff at Motueka have elected a colour scheme from two suggested by the consultant we used. The scheme they’ve chosen is a very classy red and blue.
I will be working in Motueka for the next ten or so days while Karen is away.
Wishing everyone a lovely weekend.!

Nicki Moen has done a fabulous job and the staff at Motueka are very positive about these great changes in layout that will have such a positive result for their customers.

Aotearoa People's Network and LIANZA and Motueka Library and Richmond Library and library news lianza weekend school, Motueka, National Digital Library, Richmond, TOTS 11:52 am
- On Tuesday 20 May, I will be heading to Kaikoura for the day to meet with the TOTS librarians. On the agenda is – getting a consistent policy for the repair/replacement of the talking book covers for the TOTS talking books
- Also on the agenda is disucussing a potential collaboration amongst libraries to buy new Library Management Software. Dunedin City have set up a collaborative LMS purchase with the 7 surrounding authorities. The will be buying Symphony the new product from Sirsi-Dynix group. They will be having a shared bibliographic database which will be hosted in Melbourne. We will watch with interest how this goes as there are several interesting and new concepts here. The consortium buying of LMS has worked for the 5 districts in Auckland with the ELGAR libraries. But the offshore hosting will be interesting to explore as well as the implications and manifestations of the shared bibliographic database.
- Mayor Kempthorne has asked Lloyd and me to actively investigate potential collaborations with Nelson before the next meeting of the Council Community Services Committee.
- On Thursday – I will be going to Tauranga courtesy of the South Island Library Managers Group. Along with Sarah Thompson from Hokatika I will represent the South Island Public Libraries.I’ll return on Friday night and back in the
- The Coffee vending machine has been in place for 2 weeks in Richmond and so far we have received $2.80 return! Helen made a bold sign for the machine so hopefully people will begin to notice that it is there and start to use it. If we get to at least 40 coffees sold/ week over the next 2 months the man will leave it with us. If not he’ll take it away. FYI – it is real coffee– ground when you order it. For $2 its a reasonable cup of coffee!
- I have a DVD which was sent from National Library about the National Digital Library of New Zealand. It is about 12 minutes long and is really interesting. If anyone would like to have a look please let me know.
- Cathy Vaughan and I went to the meeting of the TOTS Local History and Heritage Web project this past Thursday. Nicola Harwood – Nelson Public Information Services Team Leader is now driving the project and we are starting to move towards getting the project really moving. The next step will be a request for expresssions of interest from people/groups who may wish to be contracted for the writing, editing, web design and other elements of this project. We will hold a meeting for all those who express an interest and I will give a presentation of the project and the plan from here. The expectation is that those in attendence will consider how they might fit in and submit a written application with samples of their work and we will then contract a person/persons to undertake the project.
- Lianza weekend school is on 14 June and I would like to process all the registrations from TDC libraries so please forward them through to me so I can pay for all the registrations at once. Please could you get them to me this week. The programme can be found in the blog if you have not got one to hand.
- Nicki Moen is working on the PLan for the Motueka library. She met this week with an interiour designer who will be putting together a colour scheme for us.
- Peter Vause has had computer problems but has promised to get the scoping document for Richmond library to us very soon.

Aotearoa People's Network and Tasman District News and library news Aotearoa People's Network, ltccp, Motueka 10:54 pm
Aotearoa Peoples Network — I have received an invitiation to a meeting in Wellington in a fortnight re: the Aotearoa People’s network. I think this must be a good sign regarding our waitlisting status – esp as they will fly me up there for the meeting.!
LTCCP – today I delivered the “dry run” of the presentaiton about libraries to Paul Wylie, Susan Edwards and the LTCCP team. It went reasonably well and I got some useful feedback.
The actual presenation to council will be Next Tuesday 29 April.
Karen and I have had a discussion about the option of working with a library consultant to plan how to maximise the bequest money so that Motueka will get the most from the opportunity created by this bequest. I have subsequently contracted Nicki Moen a library consultant from Christchurch to work with us for couple days to this end. Nicki will be coming up in the first week of May to spend the day at Motueka library talking with staff there about their needs and seeing the current situation in the library.
Nicki has recently been working with Upper Hutt libraries on a new library there and previously was responsible for new libraries and redevelopment of libraries in Fendalton, Parklands and Upper Riccarton.
She will also soon be working with the Hokatika library to help with their plans for a new library.
Wishing everyone a really pleasant Anzac Day weekend
Lisa
