Community Services meeting 2009 Friday, May 15 2009

SUBMISSIONS TO LTCCP: About 4,500. Top issues recycling, rates increases, Motueka water, retention of cycle track. Hearings to take place during May. YOUTH SURVEY: HypeG undertook the Tasman Youth consultation, speaking to young people in Waimea West, Wakefield, Richmond. NightWatch is the current street patrol which was often unknown. Main feedback on the lack of places to “hang” esp in the evenings, and a perceived lack of followthrough following surveys. BurgerKing lock the doors at midnight meaning there is no food service available. The youth have a perception that the community doesn’t like them and they are unwelcome in community spaces.  Planned approach is to get them to come up with solutions, and consider a Mobile Detached youth service.  Is a regional issue as boy racers are being moved on from Nelson.

STAFF AWARDS- The CEO would like to see more feedback from the public on good service.  He awards a bottle of wine to staff and teams who manage this.

NEW COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER-New logo and branding exercise for Council is almost complete. The new Communications officer yet to be appointed will write the new contract for the DryCrust company.  Please use consistent branding in all materials produced onsite, including powerpoint presentations.

Presentation to the LTCCP process Wednesday, Apr 30 2008

ltccppresentation-libraries

As I have mentioned in previous posts; I prepared a presentation on libraries for the Councillors as part of the process toward creating a new ten year plan  ( LTCCP)  This was a great  opportunity to talk about libraries to the entire council, mayor and CEO.  The councillors received the presentation very positively  and were supportive of the ideas and plans in the presentation. Click on the link above to see the power point.  There are some very interesting graphs which give us information about our Library service and district as well as how we compare to other libraries of similar size to ours.  The Powerpoint takes up a lot of space so I will leave it up until we run out of free space for the blog and then remove it.

I hope you find it interesting and would really like to read/hear your thoughts and ideas about this- if you comment via the blog then others can also see your ideas

Some bits and pieces Monday, Apr 21 2008

Aotearoa Peoples Network — I have received an invitiation to a meeting in Wellington in a fortnight re: the Aotearoa People’s network. I think this must be a good sign regarding our waitlisting status – esp as they will fly me up there for the meeting.!

LTCCP  – today I delivered the “dry run” of the presentaiton about libraries to Paul Wylie, Susan Edwards and the LTCCP team.  It went reasonably well and I got some useful feedback.

The actual presenation to council will be Next Tuesday 29 April.

Karen and I have had a discussion  about the option of working with a library consultant to plan how to maximise the bequest money so that Motueka will get the most from the opportunity created by this bequest.  I have subsequently contracted Nicki Moen a library consultant from Christchurch to work with us for couple days to this end.  Nicki will be coming up in the first week of May to spend the day at Motueka library talking with staff there about their needs and seeing the current situation in the library.

Nicki has recently been working with Upper Hutt libraries on a new library there and previously was responsible for new libraries and  redevelopment of libraries in Fendalton, Parklands and Upper Riccarton.

She will also soon be working with the Hokatika library to help with their plans for a new library.

Wishing everyone a really pleasant Anzac Day weekend

Some interesting graphs Saturday, Apr 12 2008

As part of the work we are doing for the Libraries LTCCP project and with the help of Mandy and our Tech Services team,  I’ve been looking at how our library users compare to our wider Tasman District Community.  The results have been pleasantly surprising.  One of the many positive findings is that our library membership is higher than we thought at 59% of the district currently library members. This count excludes any cards which haven’t been used since 2006.  Although we certainly want to see this number continue to increase this is better than what we previously thought.

I had hoped to paste in the charts but can’t work out how to do this.  I’ll continue to work on this but, the interesting point so far is that our library user demographics by age  reflect the population at large.  Young children  and the elderly are not over-represented, and in fact the 16-40 year old group is slightly over represented in our library users!

All of this data helps to inform the long term planning process

week of 31 March Friday, Mar 28 2008

This week we have 2 new staff joining the TDC libraries team in Richmond and Murchison.

I will be spending several days in  Golden Bay to help with the shift at Takaka.

Friday 28 was the last day open at the old library on Commercial Street.   One set of m overs is coming in to shift the shelving across to the new building and Crown relocations will shift the books.

Tish and the Takaka team will be overseeing all of that and shifting the rest of the stuff across.

We are still waiting for most of the furniture to arrive and IT cabling to be installed so the IT guys can do their bit.

But it should all happen next week and Takaka library should be open for business on 8th April according to plan.

Meanwhile…. our 10 year planning for libraries is underway with our presentation to council in mid – April!!     Be prepared to be temporarily co-opted by Mandy or Trevor or me as part of this process.  It is really important that we get everything we can together for this in order to get all our ideas for the future in front of council .

I’ve come across a coulple of interesting articles this week; here is an interesting link about community / school libraries in NZ and what works and what doesn’t from Australasian Public Librariesclick here

LTCCP Day 2 Wednesday, Mar 26 2008

Today we spent up at council working with real issues and brainstorming.

I was very lucky to get given libraries as my topic.  The problem statement was about the current library services model and whether  the future of library services might look different.  This was a great place to start to explore the many options for library based products and services for the future especially in the 10 year planning for the LTCCP.

The other two council people on this team are Mandy Tomlinson from IT and Trevor James.  Mandy and Trevor will be needing help from libraries staff for this project in the next week or two as part of the fact gathering exercise.

We need to present to council in 4 weeks time. If you are contacted, please help Mandy and Trevor with any information they need as part of this project as it will help us to put the very best set of alternatives in front of council in four weeks time.

The process is both exciting and daunting and we have only a short amount of time to get lots of data in then present it.  But the better our information is going into the process the better our outcomes will be.

After 4 weeks I’l be set another project for the LTCCP and this will continue until October.

Hopefully however we’ll get the green light to continue exploring options for the libraries and this will run along side the other projects
