The Information Services team at Richmond (Cathy, Louise and Karen) have just finished our 4th “Introduction to Family History” course. These have proved extremely popular with virtually no advertising. During our opening weeks in July we had a bundle of flyers on the Information Desk and a two sentence mention in Newsline and that was enough to fill the first four courses.
Since then word of mouth has given us enough people to run another 3 courses during October and November.
Each course is four hours of teaching time over two sessions. The first session is an introduction in which we look at all the resources at Richmond library including the contents of our Research Room, Non Fiction and Reference. This is followed by a discussion on how to begin and record your family history and where to go for local history and genealogical sources. The second session involves looking at Ancestry Library Edition and the many other online resources with plenty of time to try them out with help on hand.
Comments from our evaluation sheets have included
“Over and above what we expected”
“Two sessions not enough…
“More advanced course please”
“I think this course was fantastic and I am recommending it to everyone”!!!
