September Hands-On @ Richmond Library Friday, Oct 8 2010

An enthusiastic group of 17 budding young artists attended Mat Tait’s two hour comic creations workshop at Richmond Library. Mat talked the group through the process of creating a comic strip which involved script writing and learning how to use different shots for effect just like in a film to tell a story. Each young artist wrote their own script and then as an added twist they had to swap their script with a buddy and illustrate the other person’s script. The finished outcome was a six panel black and white comic strip. At the end of the workshop Mat took the comic strips away to put together a comic book of the groups work.

Lizl Matthewson returned to us these holidays and ran two fun art workshops which saw children create their own portraits using mixed media. Mirrors, paints, pastels, bubble wrap, magazine photos, crayons and scissors were used to create the personal masterpieces.  We had 20 children aged between 5 and 9 years attend the morning workshop and 12 young adults aged between 10 and 14 attend the second workshop after lunch.

Getting messy with paints was a highlight for some

The Band Jam in the Imaginarium was also well attended and very popular with six young aspiring musicians. Paul McConachie taught the group how to record a song using guitars, vocals and GarageBand on the iMac.

Richmond July School Holiday Fun Tuesday, Jul 27 2010

The 2010 July school holidays coincided with the grand reopening of the freshly renovated Tasman District Library. The library was a buzz of activity over the two weeks while people explored their new surroundings.

Lucy and Jenny ran three Storytime sessions for the 4 – 8 year olds in the first week of the holidays. ‘There’s Magic in the Air’ was the theme which saw children listening intently to magical stories and then participating in craft activities where they made colourful hats, dragon masks and concertina puppets, and cardboard witches.

A Song Writing workshop with singer, songwriter Kath Bee was a huge hit for the older children in the second week of the holidays.

Kath had the children playing rhyming and clapping games as a warm-up to get to know the group. After some wonderful singing and guitar playing from Kath the group then launched into learning how to write their own song lyrics either working in pairs or individually. Some even brought along their own guitars to play which was awesome to see and hear. The Tasman district certainly has some undiscovered talent!

The following day, the library hosted two art workshops ‘Unleashing Creativity Art Fun’. The two workshops were run by the talented and very inspiring teacher Liesl Matthews. Liesl had the children exploring drawing techniques using crayons, pens and then moved onto creating mythological creatures used mixed media.

Check out the photos below to see what they created!
