Under the Mountain YA competition Friday, Dec 11 2009

Over the last three weeks Motueka ran a competition for 12 – 18 year olds. The aim was to highlight the Young Adult collection and do something fun for the teens. Entry into the draw was by issuing an item from the YA collection. We had a display featuring images from the film Under the Mountain and YA books that had been made into movies. Local newspaper the Guardian published article and photo promoting the competition and the special pre-screening of the film which was held at Motueka State Cinema on Wednesday night.

Major prize winners Emma Patrick and Danielle Derrett were very happy with their prizes of 2 movie passes, a copy of the movie edition of the Under the Mountain book and a UtM movie poster signed by Director Jonathan King. Four other winners won a movie poster.

By the way, my family and I enjoyed the movie. Great effects from Weta studios, the teens in the movie do a really good job and Sam Neil makes a creepy Mr. Jones.

A little bit of trivia; Maurice Gee’s novel Under the Mountain was first published in 1979 and has never been out of print. Winner of Gaelyn Gordon Award for a Much – Loved Book 2004.

Grandma’s Kiwi Christmas Tuesday, Nov 25 2008

We had our second book launch at Takaka Memorial Library on Saturday morning. This time we had “Grandma’s Kiwi Christmas” by Helen McKinlay, a former Golden Bay resident. She has also written “Grandma joins the All Blacks” and “Grandma’s week off”. All three are delightful picture books. We had between 50 – 60 children and adults and the ‘dress up in your favourite festive costume’ was taken to heart by more big people than little! The library hummed and we celebrated with bubbles and Xmas fare. Many thanks to Doris for organising this fun event.

Lianza Weekend School Sunday, Jun 15 2008

Saturday’s weekend school was really great.  I thoroughly enjoyed the day and particularly enjoyed the two keynote speakers.

There was a great turnout generally and a great representation of staff from the TDC libraries.  It is great that so many of our libraries staff took the opportunity to make the most of this professional development opportunity.

Kate DeGoldi was just enthralling.  I will be eagerly awaiting her next book in September after hearing the excerpt she read to us.  I’ll also be trying to find a copy of the Elizabeth Enright – Milendi Quartet.

Annette Milligan made me really think about our ability to create our own stressors  and equally our ability to reduce the stressors in our lives.

Her suggestions about telling oneself a positive statement to change one’s mindset were great and I know that it does work.

Cathy Vaughan, Debbie Bowden and the others on the committee did a great job on this years weekend school.  What a source of pride for TDC libraries to have hosted such a great event.  Thank you!
