Our new book group meets on the last Tuesday of each month. We had our first gathering last month hosted jointly by Margie and Tish. First question “Do you want a name for the group?” – immediately “Book-Worms” was thrown out there and seconds later a lateral thinker came up with “Silverfish” so “Silverfish” we are.
A delightful group of 10 women, most in the over 40 age bracket. We are targeting men but don’t want to do too much of a hard sell and frighten them off!
We established ground rules eg 5 minutes to talk, no problem if you just want to listen and ascertained what the group wanted from the session.
We decided we would choose a theme to read around each month and Margie and Tish would make sure there was a selection of books to choose from at each meeting. Brief notes about the titles discussed would be emailed to attendees.
Lots of lovely praise and good feedback from those attending the first meeting.
Margie and I thoroughly enjoyed sharing our knowledge in a reader’s advisory capacity and learning what appeals to others. I couldn’t resist reading my present favourite picturebook It’s a book by Lane Smith.
Tish
Hi Tish, what a great success. I like the themed idea. Nice group to start with. Did you just advertise that you where starting a book group?
Yes Helen it was well advertised in the Golden Bay Weekly and with posters around town & flyers on the issue desk & generally targeting likely customers. We find that good advertising pays off.
